I wanted to write something …

Category: MiscellaneousIuliana @ 2:38

… and then WordPress complained about my PHP version being deprecated.

Being the control freak that I am, I had to do the upgrade manually on the Amazon machine this blog is hosted on. Only, the default Amazon repositories did not provide the PHP version I needed. No problem, I needed added a new repository and installed the PHP version I needed.

Only Linux was not smart enough to uninstall the old version and Apache was not smart enough to pick up the new one. So, I had to back up everything, stop Apache, uninstall the old version, restart Apache. There were some modules missing of course, installed those too, and now the blog is yet again up and running.

Only … I forgot what I wanted to write about. Don’t get me wrong, I have a lot of ideas, I just don’t know which one I wanted to write about. And if I pick one now, it will require quite a lot of work and it is already pretty late.

I hate it when this happens, I want to do something, something else distracts me and then poof… the original thing I had to do is gone. When I was young, my mother used to say that if you forget so easily, then it is not really important. And maybe it was valid then, but in this world with everything distracting us, not so much. You can totally forget to do something important, because of the other many things that you have to do, that many are not equally important, but there is a lot of them.

Anyway, let’s give one of my ideas a try. A while ago I wanted to add some comments about an article I read, this article. If you don’t have the time to read it, let me summarize it for you: young people are not having sex anymore. Which is kinds supid  … well, if you are not having it when it’s fun, then when? When you back cracks, or when you are so annoyed of the idea of cleaning after the fact that you would rather give it up all together? :D

Here’s my idea on the matter. In my short life I went from rags to riches, and I’ve interacted with various social classes. In Romania and probably most countries, the poorest people have the most kids. Why? Because being poor also means that you have less sources of satisfaction. So, sex is basically the easiest way to get some … satisfaction I mean. And since poor people can’t afford contraception, this how a lot of kids are produced.

Unfortunately, the quest to give people access to entertainment in many forms and at affordable prices, so a big pool of consumers will make a smaller pool of providers richer, provided an overload of sources of satisfaction. So, why bother date, risk rejection and/or heartbreak, buy condoms, meet people, have sex, maybe it gets awkward, deal with the aftermath, when you can get some satisfaction playing a game, or watching some porn, immediately, in your own home, where you’re nice, cozy and almost with no risks involved. Sure, it is not the same, but it is still satisfaction. If you have different sources of satisfaction, eventually, you won’t miss sex. It’s like eating turkey, chicken, beef and rabbit meat all the time. Do you think you will miss duck meat?

If you are a student, you are probably studying, so you can afford to pay for sources of satisfaction and a roof over your head one day(aside dealing with the social pressure specific to your generation). Once that day comes if you have to work about 8 to 10 hours a day to pay for those sources of satisfaction, and roof over your head and other utilities, again, you won’t have enough time to go through the process of meeting somebody and navigate the steps that might get you there. So, this is why young people are not having sex.

That article looks at a lot of aspects, like the fact that sex is no longer a tabu subject, is as banal as normal as anything else, thus not interesting anymore. And we all know humans like interesting things. That is why we have so many movies about paranormal humans (superheroes, vampires, werewolves, fairies, grishas) nowadays. Being human and having human experiences is no longer interesting. And sex is after all… a human experience and thus… not interesting.

Stay safe, stay happy!

Later edit: If you find another blogger that manages to link a PHP upgrade and sex together in an entry as flawless as this let me know. :D
