Internet … say hello to Mayer

Category: MiscellaneousIuliana @ 23:04

Since the pandemic started and I started working from home fully, my cat Psihoza started having the impression that I have the same schedule as her. Which means wake up late, do nothing, sleep some more, play and then go back to sleep. And she was pretty annoyed with me that we couldn’t do all those things together. While I was working, she would just randomly stroll in my room and make this heart-breaking sounds.

So, I gave in, and I decided to get a kitten. I’ve always wanted a black cat. Never had one. All the cats that decided to enter my life were colorful, but not totally black. Call me crazy, but I had a fixation on this. A fixation that was almost satisfied when I moved to Edinburgh. A local tomcat that I named Donnie Darko decided to adopt me. But he was pretty independent and Psihoza did not want to share me with him, so I ended up feeding him and force some pets on him when my cat was not around, for two years until I moved.

After moving to my new flat, Psihoza’s cries for attention became even more heart breaking so… it was time. So here I was looking for a black cat, a male if possible, in a country where you cannot find them abandoned at the public bin and where people do not give them to you for free. Also, it had to be a kitten, so Psihoza wouldn’t tear him to shreds, and the little one won’t fight too much for territory.

I called two or three people, but no luck. I started talking to one of my friends about the name of this new cat and I wanted to call it Donnie Darko, because … well… But he was listing possible names and among them he mentioned Mayer, knowing about me being a big John Mayer fan. And I loved the idea of having a cat named Mayer. Not naming my cats it’s just my thing. Psihoza was named by the mother of my godson, so no surprise there.

Anyway… A few days after I started my search, a lady from Kirkcaldy posted an ad selling three black female kittens. I did not want a girl… but apparently there were no boys around, and this lady was in my town and was only asking 300 GBP for one, so I called. And on the 29th of April at 9 am in the morning I went to her house. She had three black kittens in her arms that were desperate to get away.  I caressed one of them, but it slipped away under the bed. The second one… just disappeared. The third one, was not as fast. So, there she was in my hands, and I turned the little ball of fur with her face towards me. And she hissed at me. She was 50 times smaller, caught in the hands of a giant, but she puffed her little chest and barred her small white canines at me, and she hissed at me with all her might. And I fell in love with her fearlessness. I did not care about its gender anymore. That fearlessness would come in handy to deal with Psihoza. And since I loved the name, I found myself having another female cat, named Mayer.

And she adapted pretty fast. I brought her home in the morning. Showed her where the food and the litter box were and in the middle of the night, I was awakened by a black ball of fur meowing and asking to sleep in bed with me. She did not care about Psihoza’s ownership, she wanted to be warm dammit!

She grew pretty fast, and I noticed something weird. My girl seemed to develop testicles. I scavenged the internet, apparently it is very difficult to tell a kitten gender when they are really small. And Mayer was eight weeks old when I got her.

So, two days ago, I went to the vet with a female kitty named Mayer. And I came back home with a male kitty named Mayer. Which is the best outcome possible. Because males have different characters than females, usually they are cuddlier. Psihoza is a nice cat, by all means, freakishly smart but… she’s not too much into cuddling. Mayer on the other hand, he purrs like his life depends on it, he licks my hair, he sticks to me like glue. Maybe he is needy as fuck because he is small, but still, he’s sweet as honey.

I am so happy Mayer turned out to be a male. I’ve had him for two weeks and thought him to be female and the thought of how difficult and traumatic the sterilization operation would be on her made my heart sink. For males, it is pretty easy. I remember my first cat, woke up from anaesthesia and was looking for his toys, it’s like he had no idea his testicles were gone.

When my last serious relationship ended, I used to joke that I will die alone with a lot of cats. Depending on how I felt on certain days, the number of cats used to vary between 10, when I was optimistic about my future and 50, when I was depressed.

It is ironic that the number of cats I own increased only seven years later after that dark period of my life and the reason I got another cat is not because I needed it, but because my other cat did.

Since Mayer moved in, he managed to take a dive in navy blue paint and spread it all around the house.

He managed to get stuck on the roof and almost got attacked by the crows nesting in nearby tree.

And Psihoza doesn’t go around the house crying anymore.

So… quest completed.

Also, in getting Mayer I’ve learned an important lesson. In this life, we don’t always get what we want. But, if we are grateful and appreciate what we have, it might turn out that we get exactly what we need. Or when we stop fighting for something and let life take over, what we want will come to us, instead of us chasing after it. Life finds a way, I guess.

And this is it. I am now a cat lady with two cats. That is it.

Stay safe, stay happy!

Later edit: Mayer managed to jump out my kitchen window, and he landed safely two floor down. Why? I have no idea, I guess he is not the sharpest tool in the shed.  He did it while I was working, so for a few hours I had no idea he was gone. It is probably true that cats always land on their feet and that thye have 9 lives, because I recovered him safe and sound from the internal yard of the building. I really hope he learned his lesson this time.
